Dimethyl malonate is a crucial organic synthesis intermediate. It is a colorless liquid obtained by esterifying dimethyl malonate with methanol. Widely used in pharmaceuticals, dyes, and fragrances, it is commonly employed in synthesizing barbiturates (such as barbituric acid) and the key pharmaceutical raw material piperazine. It exhibits high chemical reactivity, participating in diverse reactions including hydrolysis, decarboxylation, and alkylation, making it a versatile reagent in organic synthesis.

Used in pharmaceuticals and organic synthesis.
Dimethyl malonate is a key raw material for producing the pharmaceutical piperazine. Internationally, dimethyl malonate is primarily used as a raw material for producing pipecolic acid via the non-ethoxymethylene process, reacting with formic acid esters and urea to yield pipecolic acid. Currently, the majority of dimethyl malonate produced by relevant enterprises in China is used for pipecolic acid production, with only a portion exported.
